For seven years Hawthorn University has offered online certificates and degrees in holistic nutrition incorporating cutting edge and developing science in human nutrition into programs that support the forward thinking professionals. At Hawthorn we support a spirit of inquiry, a scientific engagement with the growing body of knowledge, and evidenced-based studies grounded by an institution that is supportive, and a curriculum rich in practical exercises and suggestions for working with our communities and enhancing our environment. We currently offer three (3) degree programs and a certificate program:

Master of Science in Holistic Nutrition (MSHN): A clinical program distinguished by an ongoing, nurturing relationship with instructors who have clinical expertise, focused on current holistic and conventional science in human nutrition. Students are trained to address biochemically unique clients and develop individual health protocols using diet, supplement, and lifestyle suggestions. Direct application of nutritional concepts is encouraged, making learning personally relevant.

Master of Science in Health and Nutrition Education (MHNE): An independent study program that provides a rich learning experience to individuals who seek knowledge in health and nutrition education. Students evaluate and synthesize the major literature, theories, practices, problems, and ethical issues in holistic nutrition education as well as demonstrate professional skills in holistic health and wellness promotion while acquiring a sophisticated body of knowledge of the field. Students learn to analyze and evaluate the strengths and problems facing nutrition educators today and to be conversant in the field of holistic nutrition education.

Doctor of Science in Holistic Nutrition (DSC):  A prestigious degree that explores the links between holistic nutrition and environmental sciences, public policy, and how nutrition affects various human body systems. This independent study program allows the self-directed student to participate in a developing tradition of thought, discussion, exploration, and inquiry in the field of holistic nutrition. Students are guided and learn to demonstrate a thorough and comprehensive knowledge of the relevant history and present definition of the holistic nutrition field including the major literature, theories, practices, problems, ethical issues, and research methods. Our focus is to provide doctoral students with a working understanding of human physiology and biochemistry and integrate that with the current science of nutrition. Studies also include information on the use of nutritional and herbal supplements, detoxification programs, and information about laboratory testing to assess nutritional and functional status.

Nutrition Consultant Certificate Program (NC): A comprehensive online certificate program designed for high school graduates who want to work as professional Nutrition Consultants to support health and wellness. A personalized, holistic approach to health education that promotes interaction and respect, this program is distinguished by a one-to-one mentoring relationship with an instructor.
