"Developing Education Resources" with Diane Carson, PhD

---

Educational handouts, which are a part of nutrition resource materials, are an important tool for the communication process for nutrition professionals. Skillfully and effectively composed handouts must be used and should contain: • Concise well-written information • Science-based explanation when necessary • Terminology that is appropriate for the targeted audience • Professional and attractive presentation • Pertinent and artful graphics This Webinar will give you a basis for the successful design of these handouts. The choice of information, the process of the layout of the information, and use of appropriated graphics will be explained. Your professional handouts, which represent your professional attitude, information, and mannerism, are all a part of how successful you will be in your practice. Your handouts will represent who and what you believe in regarding nutritional counseling. Additionally your handouts will compete with many other messages about health and wellness, and life-style and food choices. Because there is conflicting information in the media, the link between health knowledge and health behavior can be confusing for the consumer. Thus, well-written, appropriate, attractive, informative handouts from you as a health professional are relevant and needed. They will help your clients remember information verbally exchanged during a session, and provide the information they can have readily available as a reminder of their goals, commitments and behavior changes. Diane Carson received her Bachelor of Science degree in Dietetics and Biology, her Master of Science degree in Nutritional Sciences, and earned her PhD in Nutrition from Texas A&M University May 2010. Her research interests include developing nutrition education interventions using health behavior theory models to improve nutritional habits among children, adolescents, and adults.
